Every youth deserves a trained leader and every leader
deserves to be trained! The success of every Scouting
program depends on having well-trained leaders. They not only bring
a quality program to their units, but they also have more fun doing
it. Everything we do in Scouting has a purpose. Training is the key
to recognizing, understanding, and achieving the purpose behind
every activity.
If you're a registered adult leader, there's a training
course for you! The Boy Scouts of America has developed a
thorough training program for all adult leaders. It starts with
"Fast Start"-a quick introduction to the Scouting program-and
progresses through basic training for your position. Once you've
taken the basic courses, you're considered trained for your
position and you get to wear the "Trained" patch on your sleeve.
But it doesn't stop there. After basic training, there's Wood
Badge, which is the premier leadership course of the BSA, plus
dozens of other supplemental courses to help develop your knowledge
and skills. Altogether, it means there are plenty of opportunities
for even the most experienced scout leader to continue
learning.
How do I get trained? Visit the Courses page to find
out what courses are offered and how to take them. Some training
courses are offered in person, and the Courses listing will
tell you when and where. Many other courses are available online.
It's easy to get trained online at www.myscouting.org,
where you can access personal training records and take the courses
you need. You'll just need a computer with access to the internet
and a "MyScouting" account, which you can set up if you don't have
one already.
When you complete an online course, a record will automatically
be entered in the national database. Print a copy of the
certificate for your files.
How do I earn the "Trained" patch or a training knot
award? Who doesn't want to earn a new patch??? If you've
been trained, you deserve to be recognized. Visit the Awards and Recognition page
to see the requirements and download the application forms.
Where can I get more information? Contact the
Council Training Committee or the training coordinator for your
district.

As training requirements change over time for leadership positions, does a "Trained" leader retain "Trained" status? Mark Griffin from the National Training Team provides some guidelines on maintaining/retaining "Trained" status.
